Galanga or galangal belongs to the ginger family. It is grown for its spicy-tasting, fleshy roots, and it is mainly grown in China and Southeast Asia.
With its complex aromas, it brings out the flavours extremely well from seafood, but it also goes well with poultry and beef dishes as well as vegetable stews. It gives a spicy taste not only to sauces, but to marinades and even pickles.
Along with lemonade and lime leaf, it is often used to spice Thai soups.
Used for medicinal purposes in incense-burners to inhale in order to increase energy and improve mood. It has an antibacterial effect.
